Learning to Train Phase –

The FC United Youth Academy is intended for players of various abilities. The objective of the program is to create a motivating environment and a love for the game. The learning environment will be centered on teaching them not just how to play, but also how to train. We will continue to promote an inviting environment to soccer with an emphasis on expanding the player’s technical foundation. Individual mastery of the ball remains a critical focal point in the Youth Academy. At this stage, it is important to continue to encourage problem-solving in attacking and defending. While some players will intrinsically be more creative than others, we encourage independent thought and decision-making. In addition, communication is becoming a more important component of their development.

Learning to train is a skill in itself. Teaching our players how to manage success, identify weaknesses and overcoming challenges will be part of our development plan. Teaching them how to balance multiple commitments and supporting their multiple activities is a critical component of their development. We expect that players WILL attend training and that they begin to understand why it is necessary in order to achieve their desired results. Players are required to consistently attend training sessions and games. Make-up sessions and self-training may be a part of the equation so players continue to develop technical proficiency.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Fall, Winter & Spring Training
During the fall and spring seasons, players will have the opportunity to train two to three nights per week; twice as part of their team training session plus periodic Technical Development training, game sessions or Goalkeeper training. All sessions are directed by our professional coaching staff. Training sessions will last approximately 60-75 minutes.

Multi-Sport Athletes
We are cognizant of multi-sport participants and strive to provide some flexible training alternatives that will accommodate the needs of our athletes.

Winter Training
We value that our players as young as 9U and 10U are scheduled the opportunity to train two times a week during the Winter season. Winter training sessions are typically 60 minutes in duration.

Games
Youth Academy teams will participate in the Iowa Soccer Association's Youth Academy League and play approximately 6-8 league games. These games are played on Saturdays and/or Sundays and participating clubs must follow development guidelines that delineate suggested playing time.

Tournaments
In addition to the league matches, our teams will strive to participate in 2-3 tournaments each fall and spring season. The State Association requires that these tournaments be in state for these ages during these seasons. Some will maintain a festival format and most club selected tournaments do not require overnight travel. Only events assigned or approved by the Club are a part of their competition calendar.

Coaching Staff
The training sessions will be run by one of our Professional Coaches. Each roster is required to maintain at least one Parent Coach to assist with pre-game warm-ups and managing the team. Parent Coaches must complete the Club's required certification and coach education series so they are able to maintain the necessary coaching tools and/or certification required by the club or the league. All coaches at these ages must complete the USSF 7v7 Grassroots License, a National Youth Module and/or a USSF 'F' License in order to participate in the coaching of the players at matches.

Team Formation
Teams will be formed by the Staff in accordance with Iowa Soccer Association guidelines while keeping in mind social interaction components evident at these ages. Although these age groups often train as a pool, players may be placed in development-appropriate situations as a way to enhance the development of the more advanced players, as well as the late-bloomers or players who need to bridge gaps in their technical development.
